Quetzaltenango, also known by its Maya name Xelajú or Xela is both the seat of the namesake Department and municipality, in Guatemala.
The city is located in a mountain valley at an elevation of 2,330 meters (7,640 feet) above sea level at its lowest part. It may reach above 2,400 m (7,900 ft) within the city.
Quetzaltenango is a great base for day trips in the area. In addition to the (multi-day) volcano tours and the volcanic hot springs, there are many more excursions in the hilly region. This area is known for its coffee plantations and it is a popular day trip to visit such a plantation for a tour.
